Whether to accept $100,000 for a studio to use your AI likeness forever

Big production studio offered you $100,000 for your likeness to be scammed by AI and used forever in films, commercials, UGC, you name it; would you take the money? Why or why not?

Refusing to let others use their voice and face against their values, regardless of payment

Read Transcript

Okay, so my answer to this is no, for a couple of reasons. The main one is I don't want them to take my voice and my face and do stuff that are against my agenda, like against my, the way I see the world, and use it against me and then kind of share it with my happiness. So be like me, and I don't know, I feel like that's too much. I know what I do is what I love to do, and every video I take time and I think through everything I do, so I'm not into that. Doesn't matter the amount of money you pay me, and yeah, that's pretty much it.

Would reject $100,000 for perpetual AI use of her likeness, but might reconsider for $10 million

Would I accept $100,000 to let my image be used in AI forever? No. I hate the thought of my grandkids watching some Disney movie and seeing their grandma say strange things. Like, if that's not me, I don't want them to see it. That's it. No. Ask me the same question again with, like, $10 million. I may have a different answer.

Willing to let AI use their image for payment, even as little as $5,000

Would I accept 100K in order that AI can use my image? Of course. I would actually take even 5,000. I would do it; I wouldn't do it for free. I would basically do it for free, as long as I get some money from it. What do I care what they do with my image? Use it, enjoy.

Would I accept $100,000 to let AI use my digital persona in perpetuity, forever? Well, it's a good question, but I would say yes. I'll tell you why, for a funny reason, not because I want it used, but I believe that it will be used so widely, so dramatically, with or without my permission, that I might as well take the $100,000. There's not going to be much choice about the actual use.

Using their likeness seems worthwhile for the money, since they see the character as a robot, not themselves

Read Transcript

Yes. Why? I don't know. It's a lot of money. And maybe I'm wrong, but right now I don't feel that a character with my likeness is me. So I can always say it's not me. It's the robot. It's not real. Maybe right now my perception of reality, I can hold it. I believe in it. Maybe in the future I won't be able, and then maybe my answer will be different. And also I want the money. So it seems worthwhile.

Opposition to AI in the arts and AI use of personal likeness, citing inauthenticity and risks to actors

Read Transcript

So, I personally think that AI should be nowhere near the arts, like, and creating arts, whether that be cinema, music, acting, or whatever. So, my answer is kind of obvious, and I would say no. I would never let AI use my likeness for anything, no matter how much money they would give me, because it's not real, it's not authentic. It's just, it's deepfakes; it's not a real performance. You're not watching art on the screen. And so, I think this was the whole point of the actor strike in 2023. It was specifically to give protections to working actors who could be affected by AI and could cost them. And it could also get them into a lot of legal trouble if their likeness is used for something that could end up being consequential for them.
